Chapter 8

“I’ve got a bone to pick with you.” Beth slid into the seat opposite me at dinner the next day. The kids around us looked on in interest.

“Oh?” I said.

“Yeah. I had a kid doing math in my drawing class today.” She mock glared at me, but I wondered if a little bit of the glare was real.

“Oh? Is that so? How do you know it was one of my kids?”

Sebastian, who was sitting a few seats down and was in my calculus session, sheepishly raised his hand. “I was working on the challenge problem.”

“Oh,” I said yet again, laughing a little. “Sorry about that,” I said to Beth.

She waved it off a little. “We’re an academic camp. I know I’m second fiddle. I just figured if someone was taking art, it was because they wanted to do art.” She glared playfully at Sebastian, who looked embarrassed, but shrugged.

“I got told off in history for doing the same,” Travis, from my second algebra session that met just after lunch, offered up from my left.

“Oh, boy. Listen, guys, don’t use me as an excuse if you get caught not paying attention in class,” I told them both.

“But some people have free periods and it’s not fair,” Sebastian pointed out. “Yesterday it was Ava who got it and I know that she worked on it during her free hour because she told me so.”

“That’s true,” I mussed, trying to come up with a way it would be more equitable. “I’ll tell you what. I’ll start posting the challenge problems on the white board in the student center at the end of classes every day. Then they won’t be so tempting to work on during other classes and no one will have a head start with free periods.”

“That seems fair,” Travis agreed.

“I heard a complaint about you today,” Aiesha told me on our after dinner stroll.

“That seems to be a pattern today. Was it about kids working on challenge problems in other people’s classes?”

She nodded. “It was. In fact, Grace, who I hear is in your algebra class, started working on it instead of her daily essay today when I gave them ten minutes to get started today.”

“Oops. Yeah. I’m restructuring so it shouldn’t be a problem in the future.”

“Frankly, it’s nice to see the kids excited about doing work.” She laughed. “Although, I can’t really complain overall. They do tend to do the work.”

“Yeah, speaking of which, I’ve got more homework to go over, so I think we should make the walk a little shorter this evening.” Beth hadn’t joined us this evening because she was offering free time in the art room this evening. “Do you have essays to read?”

She nodded. “I got through most of my morning session’s during my planning hours, but I’ve got all of the afternoon’s sessions yet to do.”

“I was surprised by how many of the kids turned homework in after I said it was optional. Particularly after everyone seemed to be working on the challenge problems rather than the homework set.
